South Dakota State University Wokini Initiative Faculty and Staff Voluntary Professional Development Certificate Program allows participants to gain a broader understanding of American Indian history, culture, and contemporary issues that American Indian students face in higher education, resulting in a better understanding of American Indian students and in fostering respect and positive relationships. 

Welcome to the South Dakota State University Wokini Initiative Faculty and Staff Voluntary Professional Development Certificate Program! This professional development training will allow you to gain a broader understanding of American Indian history, culture, and contemporary issues that American Indian students face in higher education, resulting in a better understanding of American Indian students and in fostering respect and positive relationships. 

This portal will provide you access to the modules needed to complete the certificate program. After completing a module assessment with seven or more points, you will receive a badge signifying your successful completion of that module. Once you successfully complete all seven modules, you will earn your Wokini Initiative Faculty and Staff Professional Development Certificate.

Course Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Demonstrate how to be an ally to Indigenous peoples. 

  2. Develop confidence in their knowledge of indigenous cultures and traditions.  

  3. Demonstrate cultural responsiveness by recognizing students’ cultural context and relating respectfully with students.   

  4. Create opportunities and conditions for academic success for students from indigenous backgrounds.   

  5. Incorporate cultural references into learning activities/work. 

  6. Incorporate and support SDSU’s campus cultural inclusivity.
